The Piedmont, originating from Raleigh, and the Carolinian, originating from Charlotte, will be making their once-a-year stops in Lexington for the 34th annual Barbecue Festival. The City of Lexington's newly renovated Southern Railway Freight Depot will house a special hospitality area dedicated to the comfort and convenience of the passengers riding trains to and from the festival. The festival will also provide the hospitality area with live entertainment for passengers waiting for the evening trains. The hospitality area is hosted by the Lexington Passenger Rail Committee. Nationally, Amtrak ridership was up 1.5 percent to 31.7 million passenger trips, with revenue up 1.1 percent to $3.2 billion. Amtrak reported a $194 million operating loss, a 15.7 percent improvement from fiscal 2016, while hitting a record level of “cost recovery” in its words of recouping 94.7 percent of its operating costs through ticket sales and other revenue. ![]() ![]() ![]()
